When you find out you are pregnant, your whole life changes – everything that is not baby-related is pushed aside. However, it is very important to stay healthy at this time, and that includes keeping your mouth healthy, too! Here are some very good reasons why you shouldn’t skip that visit to the dentist.

It is important for your oral health

Your body is going through a lot of changes right now, and that includes your teeth and gums. You may be more at risk for tooth decay, because of a change in your diet or frequent bouts of morning sickness, which can expose your teeth to harmful stomach acid. Your dentist will also want to check for “pregnancy gingivitis.” This is caused by the hormonal changes your body is going through, and it can lead to tender gums and even gum disease. If there are signs you have this, your dentist may recommend cleanings more often.

“Pregnancy tumors” (which aren’t cancerous and aren’t as scary as they sound) are something else your dentist will be on the lookout for. Pregnancy tumors are a swelling of the gums in between teeth, and they often appear during the second trimester. They may be caused by excess plaque that the dentist can remove.

It is safe

A trip to the dentist may include dental x-rays, anesthetics, or medications he or she may prescribe – all of which can make a pregnant woman a bit nervous. The important thing is to tell your dentist you are pregnant (or even if, at this stage, you just think you might be pregnant) as soon as you sit down in the chair. He or she will know what is safe and what isn’t safe, although anesthetics, dental procedures, and x-rays are generally safe for pregnant women.
