sedation dentistry 2

If you have a fear or anxiety about going to the dentist, you are not alone. Too often, people who suffer from the fear of the dentist postpone the cleanings and treatments they need, leading to worse problems. There are several safe and effective sedation options to help calm your nerves and make you comfortable for cleanings and procedures.

There are three kinds of sedation that dentists use – oral conscious sedation, nitrous oxide and IV sedation. You and your dentist can determine which one is best for you to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.

With oral sedation, patients are given a pill to take before the procedure. This puts you in a relaxed, semi-conscious state, meaning you will be awake and responsive but calm.

Nitrous oxide is commonly known as laughing gas. This is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen that you breathe through a mask. You’ll feel the soothing effect almost immediately, and it’s mild sedation that will wear off quickly once you remove the mask.

IV sedation is often used for more complicated, lengthy procedures and patients who have moderate or severe anxiety. An IV is inserted into your arm, so dentists can put you in a mild to moderate state of relaxation. You will be monitored closely, and the level of sedation can be adjusted as needed during the procedure.

There are a variety of reasons why patients seek sedation dentistry. It can range from a fear of needles and certain procedures to past traumatic experience with another dentist. Sometimes patients who don’t have much fear or anxiety simply ask for it when they are getting multiple treatments done in one sitting and want to relax.
