A beautiful smile is a big deal, and not just because it looks great. Beyond causing feelings of self-consciousness every time you smile, misaligned teeth can have a negative impact on your health. If your bite is off, you may experience pain while chewing, suffer from headaches, have increased risk for tooth decay, or experience other disruptive effects.

Fortunately, orthodontics make it possible to correct most cases of crooked teeth and an imperfect bite. Orthodontics refers to the treatment of misaligned teeth and jaw irregularities, and it often involves the use of braces.

There are a couple of orthodontic options for achieving the smile you want to present to the world. Traditional braces and Invisalign are both commonly used solutions. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and what is right for you will depend on several factors.

At Arlington Dental Aesthetics and South Riding Smiles, our experienced dentists will work with you to determine if traditional braces or Invisalign will work best for you.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets that are bonded to the teeth and connected with wires. Tiny rubber bands are used to hold the wires to the brackets. Our dentists will periodically adjust the tension of the wire to gradually move teeth into their desired positions.

Braces can correct:

  • Rotated teeth
  • Jaw issues
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crooked teeth

As a result of fixing these conditions, you will be better able to care for your teeth and gums. Symptoms associated with an imperfect bite will diminish as well.

Careful attention to brushing and flossing is needed, as lapsing in your dental hygiene can result in discoloration around the bracket. Food can also get wedged around the wires and brackets, requiring frequent and consistent attention to your teeth and braces.

Invisalign

Unlike traditional braces which are fixed to your teeth until your orthodontist removes them, Invisalign trays are removable. The removable trays allow you to brush and floss normally, which means you can keep up with your dental hygiene a bit easier than with traditional braces. You also remove the trays when eating.

Invisalign is often chosen over traditional braces because the trays are less visible than metal brackets and wires, and because of the dental hygiene benefits of being able to remove them. However, complicated conditions cannot always be corrected with Invisalign.

The Right Treatment Option For You

Traditional braces are a good option for those in need of more extreme corrections to their teeth or bite. Additionally, for those who may struggle with wearing removable trays consistently, losing trays, or cleaning their trays, traditional braces may be an easier way to ensure results.

Invisalign is a more discreet way to align your teeth, is more comfortable than metal brackets and wires in the mouth, and allows you to brush and floss normally throughout the orthodontic treatment.
